The Frozen Chosen match is held to commemorate a Korean War battle, The Battle of Chosin Reservoir, that took place between 27 Nov. and 13 December, 1950. This was early in the war (which began in June 1950). OGC began holding this match in 2004 to recognize the efforts of the forces of the United Nations, which included US Army and US Marine forces. The match is conducted in cold weather, usually February, replicating the weather conditions seen during the battle. Match shooters are encouraged to use rifles that were used by American forces during the battle. Many shooters use the M-1 Garand rifle with .30-06 ammunition and no scopes are used, just iron sights.
