Youth Firearms Safety

Note:  Please do not call the club for information regarding FAS courses!  The Facilities Manager will not be able to answer your questions.  At this time, sending an email to the address listed below is the fastest, most effective way to find out more about Oakdale Gun Club's current course offerings.
Thank you.

-----------------------------------------------

Oakdale Gun Club is proud to offer a number of Minnesota DNR Youth Firearm Safety classes throughout the year.  If you are a parent who would like to register your child (under 18 only) for one of these classes, simply send an email to youth_director@oakdalegunclub.org.  You will be able to get your child scheduled for a course, as well as get all of your questions answered.

The following information is required by the DNR - please include it in your email:

  • Students full legal name (as it appears on their Birth Certificate or Driver's License)

  • Date of Birth (Student must be 11 years old by first day of class)

  • Gender

  • Mailing Address

  • Phone Number

  • Parent's Name

Additional Options for Firearms Safety:

While you probably know that anyone born on or after January 1, 1980, must pass this state exam before being allowed to buy a Minnesota hunting license, you may not realize that Firearms Safety Certification is "not just for kids anymore." Increasingly, other states require ALL non-resident hunters, including adults, to show proof of safety certification.

Due to the overwhelming demand for our Firearm Safety courses, we have decided to limit participation in the classroom portion to children only, meaning anyone under the age of 18.  Parents of children enrolled in a course may attend as well, and are welcome to take the written test as well as participate in the field walk and course of fire to obtain their FAS Certificate as well, but the courses will focus on the kids needs & their questions.

If you are 18 or older and wish to obtain your FAS Certificate, you have a few options:

  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources keeps a list of all hunter safety classes being taught everywhere in the state. You will find the list is on this web page: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearms/index.html .  Look through this list and see if you can get into another class in your area.

  • Persons 16 years of age or older can now take the Independent Study for Adults option. This enables you to complete the classroom portion of the training on your own, however, you still must arrange to take the test with a certified firearms safety instructor. For more information, see this web page: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearms_isa/index.html .

  • You may qualify for the Apprentice Hunter Validation program. This is a special, one-year, one-time only exemption for hunters who will be hunting alongside an experienced hunter. (Generally, for children hunting for the first time with their parents.) For more information about Apprentice Hunter Validation, see this web page: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/apprentice/index.html .

For a list of other Hunter Safety Certification programs in the Twin Cities metro area, check the Minnesota DNR web site or call the Minnesota DNR at 1-800-366-8917.
